Here is an article entitled "
Pedigree becoming stupider as we breed them for looks, not brains." Yikes. A Swedish study of 13,000 dogs found that traits like sociability and curiosity are found at reduced levels in dogs bred for appearance. The article also talks about how this is a modern phenomena - in the past, dog were bred for personality traits that helped them work. Now, dog show standards and the trend of using a dog as a fashion accessory have led to breeding more for looks not personality.
I love a cute, nice looking dog as much as the next person, but is this fair to the species known as human's best friend? It seems it would be difficult to breed dogs that are both really smart and meet a high standard for appearance. How often in humans do we find Einstein intellect with Brad Pitt looks? Surely though, there has to be a balance. Breeding a dog just for looks so he can win shows or loll around and look cute feels to me like reducing him to an object to be manipulated, not a being with feelings whose best interests are our responsibility.
