Photo of Muttville founder Sherri Franklin from http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2008/11/29/BAIA149NHG.DTL&o=4Seeing any dog on death row in a shelter is heartbreaking, but it is especially sad to see senior dogs that have been someone's companion for many years there. I cannot imagine the pain and loss for both the human and the dog when they part ways at the shelter. This story was so uplifting - Sherri Franklin and her non profit Muttville specialize in finding homes for older dogs. It is really heartwarming to see that so many people want these dogs to have a peaceful old age.
What is also inspiring is that this is truly a shoestring operation. They have a small budget and the founder draws no salary. The organization relies on foster homes to keep the dogs until permanent homes are found. Her "business" is growing, which is great for the dogs that find new homes but a sad reflection of increased need.
