In the first case, a woman in Sheboygan, Wisconsin allowed her morbidly obese dog Jiffy (see photo below) to stay outside, on the sidewalk, in single digit temperatures for so long he froze to the sidewalk. There's a lot to find wrong in this story, enough to fill many blog posts, but there are some encouraging points too. The police took the woman into custody and are recommending she be charged with misdemeanor animal neglect. At the time of the articles I read were posted, the dog was in the care of the local humane society which means he wasn't returned immediately. The humane society has gotten numerous calls wanting to adopt the dog.

What's wrong with this would fill a book. Fortunately for the dog, now named Murphy, he was found by an incredible person who rushed him to the vet, is taking responsibility for the medical bills and is now taking Murphy home forever. What's encouraging is that the police have arrested Murphy's prior owner on one count of felony animal cruelty. At press time for one article, he was still in jail on $25,000 bail.
