Amazing dogs and their people

Here is an amazing story full of doggy love. One of my favorite lessons I've learned from dogs is to love whatever you have. Dogs don't spend time ruminating on what they don't have, they live with whatever gusto they do have! Here is the story of a woman raising 4 chihuahuas who use carts in place of front legs.

Help your local shelter at no cost to you

Did you know your local shelter may need things that are hard to get rid of? For example, my local shelter takes things like bed pillows, which local charities do not. If you have anything that might make a kennel more comfortable for a dog during his or her hopefully short stay, call your local animal shelter and see if they want it. Many shelters also post wish lists too, so you may want to scan those and see if you have anything that you have been wanting to get rid of.

I took a load of old towels in to the South Central Los Angeles shelter when we adopted our newest dog, and I was so touched when I saw a newborn puppy sitting on one of "my" towels when I went back to pick up my new family member. That my old stuff would help a dog that has the misfortune to be in a shelter is so gratifying.

Some ideas of what might be useful (always check that the staff can use your donation first): towels, rags, sheets, blankets, and pillows. They may want any pet castoffs you have such as bowls, pad, beds, collars, leashes, etc. Some shelters need newspapers as well.

From fighting dogs to loving dogs

What a great first post for daily dog lick! This excellent article by Brigid Schulte of The Washington Post provides an update on the rehabilitation of the dogs confiscated from Michael Vick. So many of them are doing really well, and many others are improving. It is just so uplifting to me to see such an outpouring of love toward these mistreated dogs. I am also glad to see that people are learning more about the extent to which they can be helped, instead of just assuming they all have to be killed.
