Yearly cost of pet ownership

I found this interesting calculation of the yearly and one-time costs of owning a pet at Petfinder.com. I appreciate the work that went into this, but I think it's way understated. Assuming I count Danny who is 72 pounds as a big dog, my costs are much higher than the $700 annual reported here (He's a short haired dog, so I am not considering the $400 for long hair grooming). I think it's great to have information available because pets do cost money, and potential owners should consider how they will handle costs before adopting. My concern though is that people will be shocked by how much more it really costs.

Flea treatments cost about $17 per month and are not itemized here. I pay $15 per month to bathe him at a self-service dog wash. Even minor health issues can cost quite a bit. A recent bout of worms required three stool samples at a cost of $38 each ($114 total), as well as medication that cost about $100. Most people go away for at least a few days each year, and there is no costs for boarding or dog sitting. Pickup bags are not included, although you could re-use plastic grocery bags and not pay. I don't recommend this as it is not very environmentally friendly. I've been able to buy biodegradable pickup bags in bulk for about 7 cents each. The cost of food included here is less than $30 a month, and our cost has consistently been $40-$45. We have tried to trim his nails at home, but have been unable to do it so we pay $10 a few times a year for trims. If you need any training help, individual sessions with a trainer cost $100 to $150 here in Southern California. A class will run about the same as one individual session. If you want to go solo, book and DVD's can cost $20 or more each, and you might need a few before you find the right one. We have one dog who is a real puller, and in our effort to train him have gone through 6 collars (none have helped much). Even really good dogs will occasionally cause some damage which might cost too.

So, read this chart with a grain of salt and expect more costs than shown here.

Pinups for Pitbulls

One of the things I find fascinating about dog rescue is the wide variety of ways people find to help. Here is a really unique one - beautiful women modeling their pinup girl style to help Pitbulls. At Pinups for Pitbulls, their mission is education, fund raising and changing the reputation of Pitbulls (and related breeds and mixes).

Vick dogs featured in Sports Illustrated

Here is a sweet photo set of the former Vick dogs with their new owners. They all look so sweet and cuddly - it's hard to believe they were once mistreated. Chalk one up for dogs' ability to bounce back.

The aftermath of Christmas for gifted pets

Now that Christmas is behind us, no doubt many families are adjusting to life with a new puppy or other pet. There is a lot of information on why Christmas gifts of pets are not a good idea. Even if the decision to add a pet to the family is a well-researched one, the hectic holidays are not a good time to do it.

That being said, now is the time that these new gifts must be handled by their new families. It makes me incredibly sad to know that shelters will be packed with Christmas gifts that have lost their appeal and are now cast aside as easily as a no longer wanted toy or sweater. If you or someone you know has gotten a pet for Christmas, please begin today, now, to train and care for your new animal so he or she doesn't end up in a crowded shelter any time in the future. If you cannot afford training classes, there are lots of free resources on the web, and your local rescue group or municipality may offer free or low cost training assistance.

More stiff sentences for dog abuse

While it is always a sad day when any story of dog abuse surfaces, what is encouraging is that abusers are getting sentenced to jail time and fines. I last wrote about punishments for dog abusers here, and today I am pleased to report two more stories of dog abuser sentences.

In the first story, Christine Abrams of Cocoa, FL moved out of her house and left her dog in a cage. Period. That's the end of the story - there was no "and asked a neighbor to look after her" or "got into an accident and couldn't make it home" or "went back twice daily to care for her." Abrams admitted that she knew her dog would die. Where do I even begin to comment on this story? The good news is a judge saw fit to sentence her to 8 months behind bars and a $5,000 fine. Christine's attourney is appealing the sentence because she is remorseful and shouldn't serve time. Puh-lease. I seriously hope no judge accepts that and reduces either her sentence or fine (I'd be pleased with an increase though!).

Read the story in the local news here.

In a story from New York, a man who plead guilty to beating his girlfriend's puppy (felony animal abuse) got a sentence of two years behind bars and cannot ever own a pet! This brave judge even threw out a plea deal after he deemed it inappropriate for the crime committed. Given the link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to humans, it is not surprising that the abuser also faced charges of assaulting his girlfriend (they were droppped in a plea deal).

Read the story here.

Here's a great last minute gift you can give from your computer! It's clutter-free, sweatshop-free, and very valuable. Sponsor a dog at Best Friends Animal Society for $25. You get to choose which dog you sponsor, and it was fun (and sad) to look through all the stories. Your greeting, along with the dog's bio is delivered to the recipient via email (printable if you need it too).

Happy giving!

Good and bad news from Texas

The good news - 55 people were indicted when undercover Texas state police agents broke up an extensive dog fighting ring in November. Even better is that Texas upgraded dogfighting from a misdemeanor to a felony following the Michael Vick incident. I am thrilled that Texas has begun taking dogfighting seriously.

On the not so good side, at least 80 the 187 dogs seized were put down. It makes me so sad that people could mistreat dogs so badly, and that the poor dogs were killed because of that mistreatment.

Read the New York Times article here, but prepare to be outraged and sad.

Problems with Biden's puppy breeder

Last Friday, I wrote this post about my disappointment at Joe Biden's choice to get a puppy from a breeder rather than a shelter. I was even further disappointed to see that the breeder he choose has been cited for various problems. Of great concern to me are the "unsatisfactory" grades in various issues of maintenance and sanitation (follow the link to the inspection report from here). I could see someone messing up paperwork, but maintenance and sanitation? Yuck.

If you feel the need to go to a breeder, be sure to do your homework and pick a responsible one. In the second article I link to below, there is an interesting discussion of how this kennel, at first glance, seems idyllic.

Read the relatively mild ASPCA press release here.

Read the more pointed Christian Science Monitor post here.

Read an eye-opening post (including comments) on what's wrong here.

Maybe it's after bathtime?

Here's a sweet picture of a dog wrapped snugly in a towel. Looks cozy, especially if he or she just finished a bath. Of course I love the tongue.

Dogs are a lot of work

Anyone who reads this blog or knows our family knows that we love our dogs and would go to great lengths for them. They bring more joy, laughter, fun, experience, positive energy and enjoyment than I could ever describe. My husband grew up with dogs, but my first dog was Danny, who we adopted in March 2007. When we were gearing up to adopt and early in his time with us, I was an outspoken advocate that anyone who could care for a dog and wanted one should adopt one. I believe it is possible to give a dog a great life and adequate exercise even if you live in an apartment.

Two and a half years, one more dog and one health crisis later, my encouragement to potential dog owners is just as strong, but is more tempered with reality. Having known for years we wanted dogs, I thought I was prepared for the experience. What I didn't know was the true extent of the time, energy and money it takes to be a dog guardian.

I recently tallied up the time I spend every day on our two dogs, and it turns out to be a whopping 2 3/4 hours! This doesn't include trips to the vet, monthly baths, trips to the pet supply store, applying flea treatment, nail trims, coat brushing, teeth brushing, research, dog park time, affection, the bedtime routine my husband does with them, other outings or time spent with a trainer or in class.

Here's the break down (in minutes):

Morning out for Calvin 10
Breakfast 15 (make food and supervise eating)
Morning walk 75 (60+ minutes walking, leash up, water, etc)
Pick up yard, change water 15
Training 20 (10 minutes each on commands)
Dinner 15
Evening walk 15
-------

Total 165 minutes, or 2 3/4 hours

You might think that with this amount of time my dogs are well-groomed, usually good and tired and well-trained. The reality is the are pretty good on most counts, but there is huge room for improvement. If I could put even more time in, I would do a second 10 minute training session each, an additional 1 hour walk per day, more trips to the dog park, more outings, more coat brushing and more teeth brushing.

I'm not complaining - I love my dogs and I find it immensely satisfying to give them the best life I can. It's worth getting less done in other areas of my life to care for my dogs. I do think it's important that potential dog owners really think about how they would work this kind of time commitment into their daily lives. Some dogs may not require this much care, and perhaps I could get away with less if it was necessary but no matter what kind of dog or how old he is, he needs a good amount of time every single day.

Superdog

Superdog, originally uploaded by William Krusche.

If you love dogs, you probably think they are all super but they don't all look like Superman! Love this picture of Superdog. The way the body is just flying above ground makes me want to be a dog and run, run, run.

Thanks for a great picture!

Biden gets puppy from breeder

I am disappointed that VP elect Joe Biden got a puppy from a breeder instead of a shelter. Millions of dogs are killed every year in shelters for lack of homes. He could have set an excellent example and saved one of these dogs from more time in the shelter followed by death. Not only could he have saved one puppy, but there would have been a ripple effect from his influence as well. This could have been a great way to publicize this huge, inhumane, costly and human-caused problem. Bummer.

Read the story here:

Disabled dogs

I am so thankful to live in a time when caring for a dog with physical challenges is not only possible, but accepted and even admired. When Danny was sick and could barely walk, I towed him around town in a big yellow garden wagon. At the dog park, I lifted all 60 pounds of him in my arms like a baby and laid him gently on the ground so he could wrestle with the other dogs as best as he could. The entire time, people were incredibly supportive and kind. I remember one woman who had just adopted a 100+ pound dog from the shelter, and the dog was very sweet and playful and loved Danny (the feeling was mutual). The problem was, he had no idea how big he was. The woman sat on the ground, in the dog park, and coached her dog through play sessions for Danny's benefit. I remember feeling so amazed that someone would do that for him and for me. A new friend I made at the dog park emailed her online dog group trying to help me follow up on clues of what might be making him sick.

A touching scene happened at a school during recess. There were a bunch of boys, perhaps 10 years old, standing by the fence as I wheeled Danny by. One of them made a funny crack - "Man, that is one lazy dog." Another boy piped in "Shut up man, maybe he has no legs." At that point, a few more kids had gathered and I responded, "Well, actually he can't walk much at all." The communal "Awwwww" was enough to melt my heart. I quickly explained that even though he was sick, he had a great life that included lots of walks and playtime to which they responded "cool." I was very touched by their empathy.

Having cared for a disabled dog, I appreciate all the great resources that are now available for these dogs. I read with great interest this story about Purdue mechanical engineering students making a exoskeleton to help dogs with hip displaysia walk more comfortably. I think it's a great idea for the students to work on a real world problem that might help many suffering dogs some day. I wish them much success!
